What is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis is a disease of the liver, in which the normal shape of the liver is distorted due to some infection. Hepatitis is not injurious for health until and unless the disease is viral and contagious. There are three basic types Hepatitis. They are Hepatitis A, B and C. It has been found out by researchers that Hepatitis C is more common and most people around the world suffer from this disease.

There are other forms of Hepatitis as well. They are auto-immune hepatitis, fatty liver hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis and toxin induced hepatitis. It has been estimated that around 250 millions people of the world suffer from Hepatitis, while, 400 millions people are the carriers of this disease.

The doctors who study about liver are called Hepatologists. They are of the opinion that the liver, which makes up 2-3% of the body weight, has 140 diverse functions. When a person suffers from hepatitis, then the normal function of the liver is hampered and the cells become enlarged. This is generally caused by unbalanced diet in which the amount of fats is more than required.

In abnormal condition of the liver, during Hepatitis, the bile secretion from the liver is lessened. Moreover, normal clotting of the blood is hampered. The bile neutralizes poison and in hepatitis patients, the liver cannot produce the bile in proper quantity.
